    Goal: Cave City School District will provide support for students in making Healthy Lifestyle Choices by implementing systems to aid in decreasing the average BMI on routine annual student screenings and increasing collaboration between all segments of the school community in support of positive lifestyle choices.

All preschool students will be screened by the North Arkansas Educational Services Center for speech and developmental delays.       In order to better communicate with parents, the school will join with AlertNow systems to have a direct line with parents. This system allows the school to call parents when students have excessive absences. Students must be in school in order to learn. It also keeps parents aware of upcoming events. This last year, only 47% of the parents were getting notes sent home from school.

              The Cave City District offers an ALE program. It is designed to help students receive credit recovery in order to meet graduation requirements. Students will be referred to the program by teachers of counselors. The referral will then be reviewed by a placement committee which will consist of the principal or assistant principal, counselor, ALE director, a classroom teacher, the parent, and the student. Instruction will focus on correcting the reasons for slow academic development. The goal is for the student to reenter the regular classroom once these deficits are corrected. The committee will contine to monitor the progress of the student once they exit the program. The counselor and a behavioral specialist will be available if needed.

During the 2010-2011 school year, 5 students returned to the regular classroom. There was a total of 38 students in the program. There were no ALE students that dropped out of school.

Body Mass Index Data SY 2009-2010: 639 students were assessed in grades K,2,4,6,8, and 10. 50% of the males and 42% of the females were at risk of overweight or overweight. Body Mass Index Data SY 2008-2009: 663 students were assessed in grades K,2,4,6,8, and 10. 43% of the males and 48% of the females were at risk of overweight or overweight.
              2. The School Health index over the past 2 years indicates that opportunities for more physical activity be provided. Also healthy lifstyle education needs to be addressed.
              3. In the district 69% of the students received free or reduced meals.

              The Cave City School District has developed District wellness policies in collaboration with the district Nutrition and Physical Activity Committee. Policies have been approved by the district school board. Policies include the 5 federal requirements: goals for nutrition education, physical activity and other school based activities, nutrition guidelines, guidelines for reimbursable school meals, a plan for measuring implementation of the local wellness policy, and community involvement. The Policy statement has been submitted to ADE, Child Nutrition Unit, per the required submission deadline of May 15, 2006.
